Treatment Protocols
Approved on-scene steps for common medical emergencies.
Cardiac ArrestCPR
- 1Confirm scene safety and check responsiveness.
- 2Call for backup and request a defibrillator.
- 3Begin chest compressions: 30 compressions, 2 breaths.
- 4Apply AED and follow the voice prompts.
Severe BleedingHemorrhage
- 1Apply firm direct pressure on the wound.
- 2Apply a tourniquet above a limb-threatening bleed.
- 3Monitor for shock and keep the patient warm.
- 4Transport to hospital immediately.
BurnsThermal
- 1Stop the burning and remove from the heat source.
- 2Cool the burn with running water for 20 minutes.
- 3Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing.
- 4Do not apply creams or burst blisters.
ChokingAirway
- 1Encourage the patient to cough.
- 2Give up to 5 back blows between the shoulder blades.
- 3Give up to 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich).
- 4If unresponsive, begin CPR.
